An Ohio man has admitted to killing over 40,000 fish by dumping hazardous substances into the Scioto River. Mark Shepherd, 72, pleaded guilty to violating the Clean Water Act by releasing 7,000 gallons of wastewater containing pollutants and hazardous substances into the river near Kenton. The pollutants came from two businesses owned by Shepherd, including one that transports hazardous materials. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost emphasized the importance of holding businesses accountable for polluting natural resources. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources determined that the wastewater killed 43,094 fish, valued at approximately $22,500. Shepherd’s sentencing is scheduled for August 12, 2024.
