In a move to assess the preparedness of its military, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un conducted an inspection of key military bases on Wednesday, state media revealed. The visit is part of Pyongyang’s broader national defense strategy, which emphasizes “strategic deterrence” in response to rising hostilities with South Korea and the United States.

According to KCNA, North Korea’s official news outlet, Kim Jong Un expressed concerns over the “ever-increasing threat” posed by the United States’ nuclear arsenal to his country’s national security. He emphasized the need for a robust response, stating, “The long-term threats demand that we decisively enhance our war deterrence and adopt a stringent counteraction posture with our nuclear forces.”

During the inspection, Kim underscored the pivotal role of North Korea’s missile defense system in safeguarding national security and deterring potential conflicts. He also called for the modernization of the country’s armed forces, with a particular focus on prioritizing the strategic missile force in future developments. Furthermore, Kim reaffirmed his commitment to leveraging the country’s nuclear capabilities to counter perceived threats.

These developments come on the heels of heightened tensions between North Korea and its southern neighbor. Earlier this month, Pyongyang strongly objected to South Korea’s military parade commemorating Armed Forces Day, with Kim accusing Seoul of flaunting its military might near a nuclear-armed state. He also criticized South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol for threatening force and conducting joint military drills with the US. Kim warned that any encroachment on North Korea’s sovereignty would prompt an immediate and decisive response, including the potential use of nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, North Korea faces allegations of deploying troops to support Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine. Recently released photos by South Korea’s National Intelligence Service appear to show hundreds of North Korean soldiers and ammunition being transported to Vladivostok, Russia. Pyongyang has vehemently denied these accusations.
