A nationwide recall has been issued for certain sweet treats sold at major retailers, including Walmart, Target, and Dollar General, due to the risk of salmonella contamination. The affected products are Palmer Candy Company’s “White Coated Confectionary Items,” which may contain the bacteria that can cause serious illness.

According to the FDA, the recall was initiated after Palmer Candy’s liquid coating supplier notified the company of a potential contamination risk from one of their suppliers. The FDA classified the recall as a Class I, the highest risk level, although there have been no reported cases of illness or injury.

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of salmonellosis, the illness caused by salmonella, include upset stomach, diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramping. Most people who become sick with salmonella recover at home within a few days.

Palmer Candy Company, which has been in operation since 1878, is one of the oldest candy companies in the United States and has been family-owned and operated for over 140 years. The company’s website states that it is committed to producing high-quality candies, but the recall highlights the importance of vigilance in ensuring food safety.

This recall is not the first salmonella-related incident in recent months. In May, a salmonella outbreak among backyard poultry in 29 states affected over 100 people, according to reports. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of proper food handling and preparation to prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses.
