Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has filed a motion to vacate the chair, which would require the House to vote within two days to remove Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). Johnson is expected to try to table the motion, but Greene and her allies have not revealed their next steps if the motion is defeated.

Some Republicans, including Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH), may vote against tabling the motion, indicating uncertainty about Johnson’s future despite support from Johnson-friendly media outlets. Greene took action after giving Johnson almost two months to end his coalition with Democrats, during which the Speaker pushed through President Joe Biden’s priorities.

Despite meetings with Greene and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) to discuss accountability measures, Johnson’s refusal to negotiate led to the filing of the motion. Greene and Massie had suggested ways for Johnson to align with Republican interests, but they grew frustrated with the lack of action from the Speaker.

As tensions rose, Johnson scheduled a vote on an FAA extension, signaling his unwillingness to fight for conservative priorities. Democrats, led by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), have pledged to support Johnson, hinting at secret concessions and alliances beyond party lines.

Former President Trump’s approval of Greene’s fight against Johnson further weakened the Speaker’s position. Johnson’s decisions to fund Biden’s policies and increase foreign aid despite prior promises have drawn criticism from within his party.

Democrats have committed to saving Johnson in the initial vote but may withdraw support if subsequent votes are needed. The situation remains fluid, with developments expected in the coming days.
