A Kansas City family is seeking justice and answers more than two years after a 27-year-old mother of three was fatally shot. Despite a person being taken into custody on the night of the shooting, no charges have been filed.

The victim’s mother, Donna Wilson, is still grappling with the loss of her daughter, Hannah Leeson, a singer and devoted mother. “It’s something you can never get past, and we can’t get over it,” Donna said, her voice filled with anguish.

Leeson was shot near the 11800 block of N. Illinois Avenue in March 2022. The person taken into custody has not been named, as they have not been charged with a crime. The Wilson family has been left in the dark, with repeated attempts to contact the authorities met with silence.

“We’ve tried to call, left voicemails, tried to get another meeting set up, and we haven’t gotten any return calls,” said Ricky Wilson, Leeson’s stepfather. The family had even scheduled a meeting with the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office, only to have it cancelled before it could take place.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office cited the absence of Prosecutor Thompson until next week, and declined to comment on the case or confirm any meetings with the victim’s family.

The Wilson family is desperate for answers and resolution. “If it was your child, you would have taken care of it, you would have had the answers,” Donna said, her frustration and grief palpable.
