Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) pledged that a House committee will investigate Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg this month.
Johnson appeared on Fox News Sunday less than two weeks before the House Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government will hear testimony from Bragg. This hearing, set for June 13, follows Bragg’s victory in his criminal case against former President Donald Trump, who was found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records.
“And the purpose of the hearing is to investigate what these prosecutors are doing at the state and federal level to use politics, you know political retribution, in the court system to go after political opponents of federal officials like Donald Trump. That’s a really important thing for us to delve into,” Johnson said. “And we’re going to look at a special counsel Jack Smith, who we believe is abusing his authority as well.”
The mention of Smith pertained to his ongoing election subversion case against the former president. Trump pleaded not guilty to charges tied to his handling of classified documents after his presidential term.
Despite Trump’s loss in the New York trial, it has coincided with a surge in financial support for the Republican presidential candidate. The Trump campaign raised $1.5 million after the first day in court and then doubled that amount three days later, with total donations amounting to $76 million raised in April alone. Within the first 24 hours following the verdict, Trump’s campaign raised $52.8 million.
Trump himself has shown no signs of halting his 2024 campaign. Instead, he assured supporters outside the courthouse that he is still “fighting for our country.”
Judge Juan Merchan is scheduled to sentence Trump on July 11, just before the Republican National Convention, where the former president is expected to be named the party’s presidential nominee.
