A new type of crime wave is sweeping the United States, with teams of burglars from South America targeting high-end homes and stealing millions. Sheriff Mike Bouchard of Michigan’s Oakland County attributes part of the problem to a specific visa waiver program that allows international gangs to enter the country with little scrutiny.

Law enforcement officials are grappling with these sophisticated crime gangs that target affluent communities, stealing cash, jewelry, and luxury items. More than 40 homes in Oakland County, Michigan, have been burglarized since late 2023.

Sheriff Bouchard has sought federal assistance to address the overwhelming number of burglaries, as local and state efforts have not been successful in stopping these crimes. The organized break-ins are not confined to Michigan but have been reported in at least eight states across the country, with evidence indicating involvement from Chile, Venezuela, and Colombia.

These crime gangs operate in teams of three-to-six members, each with specific roles in carrying out theft using tools to disable surveillance systems. The Department of Homeland Security is aware of the increase in these burglaries and is collaborating with Chile to address the issue.

Overall, about 100 criminal crews are active nationwide, with a focus on preventing travel to the U.S. by known criminal actors from South America. National policies and improved cooperation between authorities are essential to combat this escalating crime trend.
