Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey is urging President Joe Biden to reassess his decision to stay in the presidential race following his recent debate performance. In a statement on Friday, Healey praised Biden for his efforts in the 2020 election, saying he “saved our democracy” and has done an “outstanding job” in his four-year term.
Healey expressed her gratitude for Biden’s leadership, noting that she is aware he believes this election is the most important of their lifetimes. The governor emphasized the need for Biden to make a decision on the best way forward, stating that whatever he chooses, she will do everything in her power to ensure a victory over Trump.
During a meeting with fellow Democrat governors and Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday, Healey and other governors voiced their support for Biden. Following the gathering, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper also released statements backing the president.
In the wake of his poor debate performance, some Democrat donors and Congressmen have called for Biden to withdraw from the race. However, the president and his campaign remain committed to staying in the election and have no plans to drop out. At a rally in Madison, Wisconsin, on Friday, Biden reaffirmed his decision to continue the campaign, vowing to defeat Trump.
