In Baltimore County, Maryland, officials reportedly aided a convicted illegal alien sex offender in avoiding deportation for several weeks by suspending his prison sentence and releasing him into the community, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Raul Calderon-Interiano, a 25-year-old from Guatemala, initially arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border near Laredo, Texas, as an unaccompanied minor in June 2014. He was given a Notice to Appear (NTA) in federal immigration court at a future date.
However, Calderon-Interiano was not deported and in January 2023, he was arrested and charged by the Baltimore County Police Department for sexual abuse of a minor, attempted sexual abuse of a minor, third-degree sexual offense, third-degree attempted sexual offense, and second-degree assault.
On the day Calderon-Interiano was charged, ICE agents issued a detainer against him, requesting custody if he were to be released from jail.
However, the court suspended Calderon-Interiano’s prison sentence but mandated him to register as a sex offender. Consequently, the Baltimore County Detention Center released him instead of transferring him to ICE agents for deportation.
On May 29, ICE agents apprehended Calderon-Interiano outside his residence in Baltimore. He is currently in custody awaiting deportation.
