The mayor of Madeira Beach, Florida, abruptly resigned on Friday, citing health concerns, but also expressing dismay over “corruptive behavior” among local leaders. In a letter to residents, Jim Rostek expressed his commitment to supporting the community and encouraged them to stand up for what is right.

Rostek had previously expressed concerns over the city manager’s refusal to implement policies, wasteful spending, and selective enforcement. He had also questioned the city’s procurement process and believed there was more to uncover.

Rostek won his bid for mayor in 2023 with 52 percent of the vote, campaigning on a platform of transparency, communication, and fiscal responsibility. His resignation comes after he filed complaints with the state attorney general and Florida Ethics Commission over a city-operated video taken in City Hall that was distributed online.

City officials have disputed Rostek’s claims, alleging that the city had provided answers to his concerns and that the allegations of corruption have no basis. Rostek has expressed hope that someone from the state will investigate his claims.

In the meantime, Vice Mayor Anne-Marie Brooks will serve as acting mayor until a replacement is found.
