Participant Media, known for producing left-wing movies that were not popular with audiences, closed its doors in April, resulting in the layoff of 100 employees. Despite this, a group of left-wing celebrities, including George Clooney, Martin Sheen, Ava Duvernay, Alyssa Milano, Regina King, Diego Luna, Kerry Washington, Michael Keaton, and Jane Fonda, along with organizations like the ACLU and GLAAD, are calling for Hollywood to continue making “issue” movies.

In an open letter, these celebrities and organizations emphasized the importance of values-based storytelling in today’s society. They encouraged Hollywood to build upon the work of Participant Media and create films that engage audiences in meaningful discussions and promote social change.

While some individuals did not sign the letter and expressed their disdain for Hollywood’s focus on politically-driven films, the push for more diverse and thought-provoking content in the industry continues. The debate over the direction of filmmaking and the importance of balancing entertainment with social commentary remains ongoing.
