First Lady Jill Biden spoke publicly for the first time about the conviction of her son, Hunter Biden, on felony gun charges, saying the trial has been a “tough week for my family” and forcing them to relive “tough times.” Hunter Biden, 54, was found guilty on three counts related to lying on a gun-purchase form about his drug use following a week-long trial in Wilmington, Delaware, where his mother attended nearly every day. Jill Biden praised her son for being “strong” and her husband, President Joe Biden, as “extremely proud” of his son for overcoming addiction.

The first lady also echoed her husband’s statement that neither he nor she would pardon Hunter Biden or commute his sentence, which has yet to be determined. “Joe and I both respect the judicial system, and that’s the bottom line,” she said. Despite her son’s conviction, Jill Biden doesn’t believe it will affect her husband’s performance on the campaign trail, describing him as “a strong man, and he’s a resilient man, and he’s going to do a great job.”

Hunter Biden, meanwhile, is facing nine federal tax charges in California, while his Delaware case has not yet been set for sentencing. Legal experts consider it unlikely he will receive the maximum 25-year sentence.
