Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, expressed his disapproval of the U.N.’s vote on new Palestinian privileges and statehood in a unique manner. After delivering a speech denouncing the advancement of “the establishment of a Palestinian terror state,” Erdan used a portable paper shredder to shred papers symbolizing the U.N. charter, accusing members of shredding the charter themselves.
The U.N. charter serves as the foundational document of the organization and is considered an instrument of international law binding UN Member States. Despite Erdan’s efforts, the U.N. voted 143 to 9 in favor of granting Palestinians additional rights and privileges, with 25 nations abstaining. The decision was met with applause in the U.N. building, while Israel’s delegation, including Erdan, remained composed.
The United States and Israel opposed the resolution, with Israeli officials criticizing the decision as detached from reality and potentially encouraging terrorism. Israeli foreign minister Israel Katz emphasized the importance of direct negotiations for achieving peace and thanked countries that did not support the resolution.
