A 48-year-old woman from northwest Indiana has been taken into custody in Michigan in connection with the death of her 10-year-old foster child. Jennifer Wilson, 48, was arrested just before 8 p.m. on Saturday in New Buffalo, Michigan, following a days-long search.
Wilson has been charged with reckless homicide in connection with the death of Dakota Levi Stevens, who died in late April. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office announced her arrest, which comes after Stevens’ alleged death at the hands of Wilson.
According to investigators, Stevens was in the foster care of Wilson when the alleged incident occurred. Court documents reveal that Stevens’ neighbor told officers that the 10-year-old had run to her house and asked to be adopted just half an hour before the incident. Prosecutors say the alleged incident was captured on Ring video footage.
The investigation further revealed that Wilson’s foster home license was revoked as of June 30, 2024, according to a spokesperson from the Department of Child Services.
