House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) narrowly avoided being ousted by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) thanks to Democrats blocking her attempt. However, some Democrats are now regretting their decision after Johnson’s recent visit to former President Donald Trump’s trial in Manhattan. Representative Gerry Connolly (D-VA) expressed concern that saving Johnson’s job allowed him to act recklessly.

Despite the motion to vacate against Johnson being squashed in a 359-43 vote, Connolly believes Democrats made a mistake in preserving Johnson’s position. Johnson, on the other hand, believes he will not face another challenge this year as members prioritize having a functioning Congress during these tumultuous times.

Johnson’s support for Trump at his trial has raised some eyebrows, with other Republicans also joining Trump in New York City. These Republicans include Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), Sens. Rick Scott (R-FL), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), and J.D. Vance (R-OH), as well as Reps. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), Byron Donalds (R-FL), and Cory Mills (R-FL).
