During Wednesday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Secretary Mayorkas faced a questioning from BBC U.S. Special Correspondent and MSNBC Contributor Katty Kay regarding the delay in executive action on the border. Kay challenged Mayorkas, asking why President Joe Biden didn’t take similar action earlier, citing the recent successful implementation of an executive order.

Mayorkas responded by arguing that the U.S.-Mexico border was essentially closed until last May. He claimed that the previous administration’s policies and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic had already taken steps to restrict the flow of people into the country, making the need for more drastic measures unnecessary at the time.
