Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York has issued an apology for a statement she made during a presentation at the Milken Institute Global Conference. She had suggested that black children in the Bronx do not understand the word “computer.” Hochul was discussing the Empire AI initiative aimed at boosting artificial intelligence research in New York and promoting equity in the field. She later clarified that she misspoke and acknowledged that black children in the Bronx are aware of computers but often lack access to the technology needed for high-paying jobs in industries like AI. Her initial comment drew criticism on social media, with lawmakers like Assembly member Karines Reyes expressing disappointment and calling for better understanding and opportunities for black and brown children. Another lawmaker, John Zaccaro Jr., also expressed concern over Hochul’s remark. Hochul emphasized her commitment to expanding economic opportunities for communities of color and ensuring equal access to good-paying jobs for all New Yorkers.
