Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State and 2016 presidential candidate, has thrown her support behind Kamala Harris’s bid for the White House, crediting her own campaigns with paving the way for Harris’s potential victory.

In a New York Times op-ed, Clinton praised Harris as a strong candidate who can defeat Donald Trump, while lamenting the sexism she believes still plagues American politics. Clinton wrote that she is proud to have made it seem normal for a woman to be at the top of a presidential ticket, citing her own failed bids for the White House in 2008 and 2016.

Clinton expressed concern that Harris, as the first Black and South Asian woman to be a major party’s presidential nominee, faces unique challenges and is often underestimated. She defended Harris’s record as vice president and California’s attorney general, highlighting her work on immigration initiatives and her prosecution of drug traffickers, polluters, and predatory lenders.

Clinton also addressed the criticism Harris has faced over the recent surge in illegal immigration at the southern border, arguing that even the “ugly prejudice” of Trump supporters cannot stop a Harris ticket from winning. She predicted that female voters will be galvanized “like never before” by Harris’s campaign, which she believes will become an “unstoppable wave.”
