Rep. Eric Sorensen (D-IL) defended 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris’s decision to abandon some of the positions she took during her 2020 presidential run, stating that it’s natural for people to evolve in their understanding of issues.

During an appearance on NBC’s “MTP Now,” Sorensen was asked by host Ryan Nobles whether Harris’s reversal on certain positions was a concern. Nobles pointed out that Harris has been the de facto Democratic nominee for a couple of weeks and has already started to walk back some of her 2020 positions.

Sorensen responded by saying that it’s okay for people to clarify or change their positions as they learn new things. He drew on his own experience as a meteorologist, recalling that he was initially a climate skeptic but changed his mind after doing research and looking at data.

“I think it is healthy for people to clarify themselves as they learn new things,” Sorensen said. He emphasized that it’s natural for people’s understanding of issues to evolve over time, and that it’s not necessarily a bad thing for politicians to change their positions if they have new information or a deeper understanding of an issue.
