Senator Lindsey Graham strongly criticized the Biden administration for halting a military aid transfer to Israel in light of their military operations in Rafah. During a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing, Graham expressed his frustration with Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Gen. Charles Q. Brown.

Austin confirmed that the administration has temporarily paused, not canceled, a shipment of military aid to Israel due to concerns over the situation in Rafah. Graham lambasted the administration’s decision as “obscene” and “absurd,” emphasizing the importance of providing Israel with the necessary weapons to defend itself.

The aid package in question included thousands of bombs that could have significant impact if used in densely populated areas like Rafah, where many Palestinians have sought refuge. Despite objections from the US and other international entities, Israeli leaders remain determined to carry out their operations in Rafah to defeat Hamas.

The Biden administration had urged Israel to reconsider a ground invasion of Rafah in order to minimize civilian casualties. However, Israeli military operations in the area have already begun, indicating a potential escalation of the conflict. Graham criticized the administration’s decision to halt the aid package, warning that it could embolden terrorists and jeopardize Israel’s security.

This move marks a significant departure from the administration’s longstanding support for Israel in the wake of ongoing conflict with Hamas. Graham characterized the decision as a “strategic mistake” that could have long-lasting consequences.
