Conigliaro lived alone in an apartment on Dahlgren Place and was known for being a caring neighbor. He was a father of two and always looked out for his neighbors.

According to court documents, Conigliaro was accused by Brooklyn federal prosecutors in 2005 of being a soldier in the Genovese crime family. He worked as a loan shark for the organization and eventually pleaded guilty to a racketeering conspiracy charge, receiving a 13-month sentence.

Conigliaro had a history of run-ins with the law, including arrests for criminal usury in 1999 and grand larceny years later.

The accident occurred in the Dyker Heights area of Brooklyn, where the truck driver was attempting to make a right turn when the incident occurred. Video footage shows the driver sitting inside an ambulance, appearing shaken and in disbelief.

A neighbor who lives nearby expressed concern about the intersection, stating that it is a dangerous spot with cars frequently speeding by without turn signals. She hoped that officials would install a turn signal to improve safety.
