As Memorial Day weekend approaches, military veteran Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL) took a moment to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, becoming emotional as he remembered “seeing flags draped over the casket of my friends.”

“When Memorial Day comes around, I reflect on the sacrifice of friends that I’ve lost,” Mast shared during a Newsmax interview. “Sometimes when I hear ‘Taps’ playing in the background, I mean, I’ve just heard it too many times.”

Mast also mentioned spending the Thursday before Memorial Day helping to clean the Vietnam Memorial, noting that “he couldn’t help but weep” while remembering the men and women who sacrificed their lives for the United States.

Mast is a combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient who served in Afghanistan. In 2010, he lost both legs during Operation Enduring Freedom with the U.S. Army.

The Republican has represented Florida’s 21st Congressional District since 2017.
