House Democrats could face ethics investigation for waving Ukrainian flags after passing aid package

A request from the conservative Heritage Foundation has called for an ethics investigation into House Democrats who were seen waving Ukrainian flags on the House floor following the passage of a billion-dollar foreign aid package. The Heritage Oversight Project sent a letter to the House Ethics Committee demanding accountability for the lawmakers’ actions, arguing that waving foreign flags violated congressional decorum rules.

Mike Howell, executive director of the Heritage Oversight Project, emphasized that only American flags should be on the floor of the U.S. House and expressed disappointment that an ethics complaint was necessary to address the violation.

The letter presented two alleged violations committed by the Democrats, accusing them of defying House rules that mandate members to behave in a manner that reflects positively on the House. The group argued that waving the Ukrainian flags impugned the reputation of the House and disrespected American traditions and values.

In response to the incident, House Republicans voiced their displeasure and some even drafted legislation to ban the display of foreign flags on the House floor entirely. Rep. Kat Cammack expressed her outrage at seeing American representatives waving Ukrainian flags in the chamber, stating that the American flag should be the only one present in that room.

The letter specifically mentioned Reps. Seth Magaziner, Bill Pascrell Jr., and Diana DeGette as the lawmakers who distributed the flags. Despite the controversy, Democrats defended their actions, with some engaging with pro-Ukrainian protesters and expressing gratitude for their support after the aid package was approved.
