Eric Trump asserted on Sunday that his father’s ongoing legal issues are boosting his prospects in the 2024 presidential race by garnering support from communities that previously did not back him.
Former President Donald Trump was found guilty of all 34 charges in his New York hush money trial on Thursday, marking the first time a former U.S. president has been convicted of a felony. Following the verdict, Trump received significant support, with Eric Trump claiming a notable shift in support from independent voters.
“They’re literally bringing certain segments of the population to him that he didn’t have in 2016 and 2020, because now they see he’s a victim of the system,” Trump said on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo. “He’s the victim similar to many in their communities. You can see it in the African American vote, which is swinging towards Donald Trump significantly. Look at the Hispanic vote in the past years. Look at the youth vote right now, Maria!”
Eric Trump also suggested that the day of the guilty verdict might be marked in history as the moment his father won the 2024 election, noting he had never seen the country “more upset about what’s happening.” He alleged that Democrats believe their “little trickery” will go unnoticed, but voters are seeing “through this nonsense.”
Following the verdict, the former president’s campaign website crashed and was later updated with news of the verdict. On Friday, Trump’s campaign website raised nearly $53 million, with $34.8 million coming in within the first 12 hours post-verdict.
President Joe Biden’s campaign responded to Trump’s conviction with a statement affirming that “no one is above the law” and shared a donation link on social media. Biden is running for reelection this November, with Trump poised to be his main Republican opponent as the presumptive nominee.
In the lead-up to Election Day, X owner and billionaire Elon Musk is planning to host a live video town hall with Trump and independent presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. The Biden campaign reportedly declined the invitation to participate. This town hall comes amid reports that Trump is considering Musk for an advisor role in a potential second term.
The first presidential debate between Trump and Biden is scheduled for June 27, with CNN hosting the event.
