As Vice President Kamala Harris gears up for her 2024 White House bid, her husband, Doug Emhoff, has stepped up his role as a top campaign surrogate, bringing a unique blend of charisma and devotion to the trail.

Since Harris and President Joe Biden took office in 2021, Emhoff has largely set aside his career as an entertainment lawyer to support his wife’s endeavors. However, with Harris now leading the Democratic ticket, Emhoff has taken on a more prominent role, showcasing his skills as a campaigner and earning praise from Democratic insiders.

“Doug is the epitome of a supportive partner,” said one Democratic strategist. “He’s a natural people person, and his enthusiasm is contagious. He knows Kamala’s qualifications and strengths better than anyone, and he’s happy to take a backseat to let her shine.”

Another strategist noted that Emhoff’s presence on the campaign trail is a welcome contrast to the more low-key approach of former First Lady Melania Trump. “Doug is a breath of fresh air,” they said. “He’s a joy to be around, and his energy is infectious.”

As Harris’s spouse, Emhoff has faced scrutiny over their non-traditional family dynamics. Harris has no biological children, but has helped raise Emhoff’s two children from his previous marriage, Ella and Cole. Emhoff’s past, including an affair that led to the end of his first marriage, has also come under the microscope.

However, Emhoff has owned up to his past mistakes, and his ex-wife, Kerstin, has publicly defended Harris against criticism. “Cole and Ella inspire us to make the world a better place,” Kerstin wrote on social media. “Kamala Harris has dedicated her career to serving the people, and that’s what keeps her humble.”

Since the Democratic National Convention, Emhoff has participated in over 27 campaign events across 13 states, including virtual fundraisers, solo speeches, and public appearances with other high-profile Democrats. He’s also used his platform to push back against Republican opponents, including former President Donald Trump, who he accused of “gaslighting” with claims that Harris is anti-Semitic.

As the first Jewish spouse of a president or vice president in U.S. history, Emhoff has played a critical role in outreach to the Jewish-American community, particularly in the wake of the recent terror attacks in Israel.

While a first gentleman would not have official policy influence, former White House chief of protocol Capricia Marshall believes Emhoff would be a valuable asset to a Harris administration. “The way you welcome and host international dignitaries is a powerful tool for diplomacy,” Marshall said. “Doug would understand what Kamala is trying to achieve and would be a gracious host, bringing a modern touch to the role.”
