New York City Mayor Eric Adams is standing firm in the face of a federal indictment, vowing to continue leading the city despite the mounting pressure.

A corruption investigation into Adams’ 2021 mayoral campaign fundraising efforts culminated in an indictment on Wednesday evening. The exact charges remain under seal, leaving the public in the dark about the specifics of the case.

Undeterred, Adams released a video statement denying any wrongdoing and labeling the charges as “baseless” and “politically motivated.” He made it clear that he has no intention of stepping down from his position.

“I’ve always known that my unwavering commitment to the people of New York City would make me a target,” Adams said. “For months, I’ve faced a barrage of leaks and rumors designed to erode my credibility and create a perception of guilt. But I will not be swayed.”

The indictment comes on the heels of a tumultuous month for the city’s government, marked by a string of high-profile resignations, including the police commissioner, health commissioner, and chancellor of public schools.

Adams remains resolute, insisting that he will “fight these injustices with every fiber of my being.” Despite his determination, calls for his resignation have been growing, with prominent figures such as Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and Comptroller Brad Lander joining the chorus.

Ocasio-Cortez took to social media to express her concerns, stating that the “endless investigations and vacancies are crippling the city’s ability to function.” She urged Adams to step down, citing the need for a stable and effective administration.

Adams addressed these concerns directly, arguing that he has continued to effectively lead the city despite the ongoing investigation. “Make no mistake, I was elected to lead this city, and I will continue to do so,” he said.
