Democratic Colorado state Representative Steven Woodrow sparked controversy with a provocative social media post reacting to the apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Woodrow claimed he had no “sympathy” for Trump, stating, “The last thing America needed was sympathy for the devil but here we are.”
The Colorado Democrat’s post was later deleted after being reached out to for clarification. Woodrow claimed that Trump supporters would use the shooting as a “license to commit violence themselves.” He also condemned the act of political violence, demanding justice against the attempted assassin.
Woodrow insisted that, despite his personal beliefs about Trump’s policies, violence was never an acceptable means of resolving political differences. He emphasized the importance of engaging peacefully and winning elections at the ballot box.
However, some Democratic leaders took a different approach. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) called the incident “horrific,” denouncing it as “absolutely unacceptable” and expressing sympathy for the victims and Trump’s family.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) also issued a statement, offering his “thoughts and prayers” to Trump and praising the law enforcement response, stating that political violence of any kind is never acceptable.
