CBS’s Brennan Clarifies Trump Comments: ‘Not Meant as a Critique’

In the aftermath of the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, CBS’s Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan took to the airwaves to clarify her comments from the previous day’s broadcast. During Sunday’s program, Brennan had noted that Trump’s initial statement following the attack did not include a call to lower the temperature, condemn all political violence, or urge his supporters to refrain from retaliation or escalation.

Brennan emphasized that her observation was not intended as a critique of Trump’s statement, but rather a momentary assessment of the situation. She acknowledged that the country has been living in a heightened threat environment for some time, and the recent events had only served to confirm the worst fears. Brennan recalled that her program had previously reported on inflammatory statements made by some political leaders, as well as those who had called for calm.

In the aftermath of the traumatic event, Trump had issued a statement calling for unity, saying “In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand united.” Brennan expressed hope for a safe campaign for all involved and extending empathy to the former President and his family as they recover from the attack.
