A 25-year-old man from California has been accused of stabbing a 71-year-old woman in downtown Chicago while she was walking her dog on Wednesday afternoon, according to city police.

Wilson Barreno is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery resulting in great bodily harm to a person over 60, and use of a deadly weapon following the stabbing near Union Station on June 5.

The victim, Arlene Rado, 71 years old, was walking her dog Mickey along the 200 block of South Canal Street when she was attacked from behind, stabbed multiple times in her back and neck, as reported by her husband to WGN.

According to Rado’s husband, his wife was conscious and speaking upon arrival at Northwestern Memorial Hospital after the incident that occurred at around 1:30 p.m. She initially mistook the attack for punches until she noticed the blood.

Fortunately, she is expected to recover, and the dog was unharmed in the incident.

Two witnesses reportedly intervened, apprehended the alleged culprit, Barreno, and detained him until the authorities arrived and took him into custody.

Barreno was apprehended by the police approximately 30 minutes after the attack. His court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
