The British establishment media has launched a scathing attack on social media and Elon Musk, blaming them for the recent anti-mass migration riots that swept the country. The riots were sparked by the killing of three young girls in a mass stabbing by an alleged second-generation migrant from Rwanda.
Columnist Jonathan Freedland, writing in The Guardian, singled out Elon Musk as the primary culprit, claiming that he has made X a “safe space for racism and hate” by reinstating banned personalities like Tommy Robinson and Andrew Tate. Freedland argued that Musk is the “global far right’s most significant figure” and that a global clampdown on so-called disinformation is necessary to stop him.
Former Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger echoed Freedland’s sentiments, describing Musk as an “arsonist with a huge box of matches” who is amplifying lies and hatred on his platform. Rusbridger called for regulation to curb Musk’s influence and establish “basic boundaries in digital spaces”.
Meanwhile, Associate Editor of the Financial Times, Edward Luce, declared that Musk’s menace to democracy is “intolerable” and that he is using X to stoke racial conflict and civil breakdown. Luce argued that democracies can no longer ignore this threat.
The media backlash against Musk and social media has sparked calls for the government to take action, including shutting down social media during times of unrest and deploying geo-blocking technology to prevent British users from accessing X. The new Labour government is reportedly considering amendments to the Online Safety Act, which would force social media companies to remove “legal but harmful” content from their platforms.
Musk has pushed back against the criticism, defending his platform’s free speech stance and warning that the suppression of truth is a threat to democracy.
He has also compared the state of free speech in the UK to that of the Soviet Union, citing recent arrests for comments made on social media.
