Saudi Arabia has pledged $500 million to a polio vaccination initiative that includes the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as a partner. In return, the Gates Foundation will open an office in Riyadh. The announcement was made during a meeting of the World Economic Forum in Riyadh to address global challenges, including polio eradication.

Dr. Abdullah A. al-Rabeeah, supervisor-general of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, highlighted the progress made in Afghanistan and Pakistan but emphasized the need for continued efforts to eradicate polio. The partnership with Saudi Arabia aims to strengthen health systems in these countries.

Bill Gates expressed pride in the collaboration, stating that the investment will help build resilient health systems globally. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, with private-sector partners like the Gates Foundation, has significantly reduced polio cases worldwide since its founding in 1988.

Despite facing challenges such as funding shortages and non-compliance in some areas, the initiative remains committed to its goal of effectively eliminating polio by 2026. The deal with Saudi Arabia is seen as politically significant, particularly in addressing polio hotspots in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The Taliban in Afghanistan recently launched a polio vaccination campaign, signaling a commitment to eradicating the disease. In Pakistan, the resurgence of polio cases poses a concern, especially in remote and insecure regions.

Countries like Nigeria have also faced setbacks in polio eradication efforts, highlighting the need for continuous vaccination campaigns. Additionally, health officials are monitoring the rise of non-polio enteroviruses that can cause paralysis in children.

Overall, the pledge from Saudi Arabia and partnerships with organizations like the Gates Foundation demonstrate a joint commitment to achieving global health goals and eradicating diseases like polio.
