As the 2024 presidential election heats up, the Democratic Party is facing a growing divide on President Joe Biden’s bid for reelection. This internal conflict is playing out on MSNBC, a major left-leaning network, in an unprecedented manner.
Traditionally, the Biden White House has relied on MSNBC as a safe haven for the president’s narrative. However, the network has recently hosted a variety of opinions, including those from congressional leaders, campaign operatives, liberal pundits, and the president himself.
In a recent phone call interview with MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough, President Biden adamantly shut down rumors that he might step aside as the presumptive Democratic nominee. “The bottom line here is we’re not going anywhere. I’m not going anywhere,” he said. “I’m not letting up, Joe. I’m not letting up even a little bit.”
Just two days later, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, offering a less enthusiastic commentary on Biden’s reelection bid. When asked about the president’s viability in the upcoming election, Pelosi seemed to give tacit permission to Democrats questioning his chances. “It’s up to the president to decide if he is going to run,” she said. Pelosi later clarified her comments, stating that she believed Biden could win in November.
Nicolle Wallace, another MSNBC host, also weighed in on the topic, suggesting that a change at the top of the Democratic ticket might be necessary. Wallace implied that Vice President Kamala Harris would be a stronger candidate, citing her “magnetic” personality and “chops that don’t often get showcased.”
Chris Hayes also expressed concerns about Biden’s age, stating that it makes him increasingly likely to lose reelection to a Republican candidate. Hayes noted that former President Donald Trump, who is just a few years younger, is not subject to the same scrutiny.
President Biden is set to sit down with NBC’s Lester Holt for an interview next Monday, which is expected to address concerns about his mental acuity. NBC is the parent company of MSNBC. Biden is expected to field questions surrounding his mental acuity after his performance during the first presidential debate sent his party into a panic.
