Biden Labels Trump a Threat to Abortion Rights, Sparks Political Backlash

President Joe Biden has ignited a controversy by claiming that voting for former President Donald Trump is equivalent to supporting a national abortion ban. This statement is based on Trump’s recent stance on the issue, which he expressed in a video on Truth Social in April.

Trump’s position is that the issue of abortion should be left to the states to decide, with each state determining the number of weeks until abortion is prohibited. He believes that this approach would respect the will of the people and allow them to follow their hearts, religion, or faith.

However, Biden took issue with Trump’s stance, stating on social media that “a vote for Trump is a vote for a national abortion ban.”

His assertion was echoed by California Governor Gavin Newsom, who called Trump a “liar” and expressed no doubt that the former president would sign a national abortion ban into effect if elected.

The debate over abortion has taken on a new level of significance in recent months, following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022. Since then, numerous states have enacted their own abortion laws, with some banning the procedure as early as six weeks into pregnancy.

Currently, 24 states have laws restricting abortion, while nine states in the southern region have enacted almost near-total bans on the procedure. On the other hand, nine states and the District of Columbia do not have any restrictions on abortion.

In May, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs repealed an 1864 law that had banned almost all abortions in the state, taking a different approach to the issue. As the debate continues to unfold, Biden’s assertion that voting for Trump is a vote for a national abortion ban is likely to be a point of contention in the upcoming election.
