President Joe Biden is firmly defending his border policy, telling Time magazine that he stands by his decision to end border controls introduced by former President Donald Trump, despite record levels of illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border.

By the conclusion of Fiscal Year 2024, Biden is projected to have managed over 10 million migrant encounters at U.S. borders.

Biden also dismissed rumors that he might reinstate Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy, which required asylum seekers to stay in Mexico while awaiting their court dates in the U.S.

When asked by Time, “… it’s been reported that you’re looking at reinstating Remain in Mexico. Are you looking at reinstating … ?” Biden simply responded, “No.”

One of Biden’s significant policy decisions was halting the construction of the southern border wall that was being developed under Trump.

Additionally, Biden terminated Remain in Mexico and Central American cooperative agreements, which ensured that migrants passing through Mexico, which has an established asylum process, were required to seek asylum there first before trying to claim asylum in the United States.

Biden also discontinued the Title 42 border control while establishing an extensive Catch and Release network, which now includes a parole pathway for migrants to seek release into the U.S. interior at the southern border.
