Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont acknowledged that President Joe Biden is not widely popular among voters, but emphasized the importance of supporting him over former President Donald Trump. In an op-ed for the Guardian, Sanders expressed his frustrations with the U.S. political system and described the upcoming election as a pivotal moment in American history. He urged readers to stand behind Biden in November, despite their disagreements with his policies.

While recognizing Biden’s shortcomings, particularly on issues like Israel and the conflict in Gaza, Sanders emphasized the need to prioritize defeating Trump. He argued that Biden, despite his flaws, is a far better choice than Trump, whom he described as the most dangerous president in American history. Sanders highlighted the contrasts between the two candidates on a range of issues, including wealth inequality, abortion, climate change, and democracy.

Addressing concerns about Biden’s approach to Israel and Gaza, Sanders pointed out that Trump’s stance is even more extreme and harmful. He noted Biden’s efforts to limit certain weapon shipments to Israel, although the administration did approve a significant arms sale to the country. Despite his disagreements with Biden on certain policy matters, Sanders reaffirmed his support for the president in the face of the alternative.

Sanders has been a vocal supporter of Biden since the 2020 Democratic primary, despite their policy differences. He stressed the urgency of defeating Trump and urged progressives to rally behind Biden in the upcoming election.
