Argentina’s Foreign Minister, Diana Mondino, wrapped up her inaugural visit to China on Wednesday. She represented President Javier Milei’s government, which pledged to maintain a “friendly” stance towards Beijing despite the president’s previous anti-communist rhetoric.

During her trip, Mondino met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, reaffirming Argentina’s commitment to a positive relationship with China. This declaration comes in the wake of Milei’s campaign promises to distance Argentina from the Communist Party.

Mondino engaged in discussions with both business leaders linked to the Chinese regime and Communist Party officials, with the aim of attracting more investment to Argentina. The country is currently in the midst of a severe economic crisis following years of socialist rule prior to Milei’s election victory in 2023.

Despite Milei’s strong opposition to communism and ties with China, Mondino adopted a more conciliatory tone during her Beijing visit. She emphasized Argentina’s openness to Chinese investment and business opportunities, including projects under the Belt and Road Initiative.

While Milei had vowed not to engage with communist regimes like China, Mondino expressed Argentina’s commitment to upholding existing agreements and fostering cooperation across various sectors, including infrastructure, trade, finance, and tourism.

Although Milei’s administration aims to pivot away from China towards closer relationships with the U.S. and Israel, Mondino’s meetings with Chinese officials and business leaders signal a continuation of diplomatic ties between Argentina and China.

The Chinese government has responded politely to Milei’s election victory and his administration’s policy direction. Despite initial concerns about a potential rift in relations, both sides appear committed to maintaining stability and cooperation in their bilateral ties.
