A rookie Ohio police officer was tragically killed in an ambush on Mother’s Day weekend. Euclid Police Department Officer Jacob Derbin lost his life while responding to a call in the greater Cleveland area. The suspect, Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, ambushed and shot the officer, who was a National Guard veteran. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Derbin was pronounced dead.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost expressed his sorrow over the loss, stating that the promise to protect is upheld by the blood of officers like Derbin. The tragic irony of a mother losing her son on Mother’s Day was not lost on Yost, especially as Police Memorial Week approached.
Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer also paid tribute to Derbin, highlighting his dedication and professionalism during his time with the department. The impact of the young officer’s death, especially on his father who is also a police officer, was felt deeply within the department.
The suspect, Vaughn, was later found dead following a manhunt. Derbin leaves behind his fiancee and extended family, and his memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
