The Maryland Democratic primary is approaching, and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks is not holding back in her criticism of opponent Rep. David Trone (D-MD).
During an interview with WTOP, Alsobrooks continued to attack Trone for donating to “radical Republicans” who support anti-choice policies. She specifically pointed out Trone’s donations to anti-abortion politicians like Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) and Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA), citing a Washington Post article from 2016 that revealed Trone had donated over $150,000 to Republicans in states where his business, Total Wine & More, operates.
EMILY’s List, an organization focused on electing Democratic women who support abortion access, accused Trone of giving nearly $500,000 to “anti-choice” Republicans. They recently launched a $2 million ad campaign through their super PAC, Women Vote!, criticizing Trone for his abortion record and donations to anti-abortion Republicans like Abbott.
Trone’s personal wealth has largely funded his campaign, preventing Alsobrooks from surpassing him in fundraising. While Trone has spent over $57 million of his own money on his Senate campaign, Alsobrooks has secured endorsements from prominent figures like Gov. Wes Moore, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, and most of Maryland’s Democratic House delegation.
Recent polling shows Alsobrooks gaining ground, with a survey from Emerson College indicating she is leading Trone by 1 point among likely Maryland voters. However, Trone still maintains a 6-point polling advantage on average.
The winner of the May 14 Democratic primary will likely face former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, the expected Republican nominee. Head-to-head polling varies, but Trone and Alsobrooks are both shown to perform slightly better against Hogan in recent polls.
