McDonald’s has reportedly ended its two-year test of artificial intelligence (AI) in its drive-thru lanes, a technology known as automated order taking (AOT). The test, which was conducted in partnership with IBM, aimed to streamline the ordering process and improve customer service.
The move comes as rival fast food chain Wendy’s has already begun implementing AI-powered drive-thru lanes, powered by Google’s generative AI technologies. This technology is designed to deliver “hotter, fresher food” to customers.
The adoption of AI in the fast food industry is a growing trend, with several chains, including McDonald’s, exploring or implementing similar technologies. Burger-flipping robots have also been making waves in the industry, offering their services for around $3 an hour, significantly less than the minimum wage.
