A recent United Nations report on northern Gaza has revealed that warnings of famine in the area were unfounded, despite ongoing suffering due to the ongoing war between Hamas and Israel. The report, published by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Famine Review Committee (FRC), reviewed the FEWS NET warning and found no evidence of famine.
The report acknowledged that extreme human suffering is still ongoing in the Gaza Strip, but noted that this does not change the immediate humanitarian imperative to address the civilian suffering. In response to the report’s findings, Israeli government spokesman David Mencer stated that there is no famine in Gaza.
Mencer also pointed out that Hamas is responsible for looting aid trucks and selling the supplies at inflated prices. He noted that the IPC has previously used the term “famine” in the past, which Israel has disputed. Mencer highlighted that hundreds of aid trucks continue to enter Gaza daily, despite the ongoing conflict.
Additionally, Israel has established an additional aid corridor in southern Gaza, utilizing a daily pause in fighting during daytime hours.
