DES MOINES, Iowa — Police have identified the victim of a fatal stabbing on Tuesday as 19-year-old Abdelmagid Elzubeir. His 16-year-old brother, Mohamed Elzubeir, has been charged with murder in connection with the incident.

According to Sgt. Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department, officers responded to a report of a stabbing at 926 Oakridge Drive around 10:15 a.m. Abdelmagid Elzubeir had sustained a stab wound to the neck. Despite receiving immediate medical attention at the scene and being transported to UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center, he succumbed to his injuries.

Sgt. Parizek stated that their investigation revealed the stabbing was premeditated and stemmed from a dispute between Abdelmagid and Mohamed Elzubeir. Mohamed has been charged with first-degree murder.

Due to the nature of the offense as a forcible felony, Mohamed Elzubeir’s case has been automatically transferred to adult court. He appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday morning. Although he is a minor, he will remain in juvenile facilities throughout the legal proceedings.

If convicted, Mohamed Elzubeir faces the possibility of life imprisonment.
