MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A 40-year-old Mexican national, convicted in 2014 of causing the deaths of two children in a crash, will be deported after being detained during a traffic stop in Meriden, Connecticut.
Israel Alejandro Gonzalez-Arcinego was taken into custody on May 1, as announced on Monday by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Gonzalez-Arcinego was found guilty in 2014 of two counts of manslaughter, driving under the influence, and additional offenses related to a crash that resulted in the deaths of two children. He was sentenced to one year in prison and five years of probation.
However, following a 2015 judicial order for his deportation, the Connecticut Department of Corrections released him without notifying ICE, according to the announcement.
“Israel Gonzalez was convicted of driving under the influence and killing two Connecticut children,” stated Todd Lyons, Enforcement and Removal Operation Boston Field Office Director, in a written announcement. “His actions shattered a family. We cannot allow unlawfully present convicted felons to victimize the residents of our communities. ERO Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by apprehending and removing egregious offenders like Mr. Gonzalez from our New England neighborhoods.”
