A large group of faculty and staff at the University of North Carolina (UNC) are advocating for student protesters to be allowed to return to class following anti-Israel demonstrations on campus. Approximately 700 members of the faculty and staff have signed a petition requesting amnesty for the protesters who are facing suspension. The protests at UNC are part of a larger trend of demonstrations on college campuses across the United States in response to the conflict between Israel and the Hamas terrorist group.

The faculty members plan to deliver their letter in Peace and Justice Plaza, according to reports. Recently, approximately 1,000 protesters gathered on UNC’s campus for a march organized by students demanding that the university divest from its investments in Israel and calling for an end to the war in Gaza.

In a separate incident, UNC Chapel Hill Chancellor Lee H. Roberts replaced the American flag on the flag pole after it was taken down and replaced with a Palestinian flag by anti-Israel protesters. The flag incident led to clashes between protesters and law enforcement officers, with some demonstrators being pepper-sprayed.

Chancellor Roberts emphasized the importance of the American flag as a symbol representing all citizens of North Carolina and the values of the university. He stated that taking down the flag and replacing it with another is contrary to the university’s ethos and history. The conflict between Israel and Hamas is ongoing, with Israel launching a self-defense operation in Gaza following attacks by Hamas.
