A 57-year-old man competing in the 2024 Detroit Free Press Marathon has suffered a fatal medical emergency on the course, according to a statement from race officials Sunday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately mile five, shortly after the runner crossed the international border from Detroit, Michigan into Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Resuscitation efforts were immediately initiated, but the runner was pronounced dead upon arrival at Windsor Regional Hospital Ouellette Campus.

Race officials expressed their condolences to the runner’s family, acknowledging the devastating news that had unfolded. “It’s a tough thing to hear, and our thoughts are with the family at this time,” said Aaron Velthoven, a representative from the Detroit Free Press Marathon. “We are deeply saddened by this tragic event.”

Velthoven also extended gratitude to the medical staff and volunteers who responded to the emergency. “Their quick actions and medical expertise undoubtedly saved lives along the course, and we are grateful for their dedication,” he said.

The runner’s identity has not been publicly disclosed, pending notification of his next of kin. The incident occurred during the marathon, which saw a husband-wife duo from Ferndale, Michigan emerge victorious in the men’s and women’s divisions. Andy Bowman and Sydney Devore took top honors in the respective categories.
