Seventeen states, led by Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers, are taking legal action against California for implementing new mandates for electric vehicles (EVs). Hilgers shared his perspective with the host of Truth Voices Daily, explaining why he believes California’s decision is unreasonable and will impact the supply chain.

The regulation in question is being enforced by CARB, the California Air Resources Board, an unelected body. California’s mandate stipulates that trucks entering the state must meet certain requirements for electric vehicles, including a specific number of electric heavy-duty trucks. However, as Hilgers pointed out, there are currently very few electric trucks in operation nationwide, compared to the millions of diesel-powered trucks on the roads.

He also highlighted that the Biden administration’s EPA has similar requirements, leading to a significant impact on companies’ fleets. In particular, companies transporting goods to markets like Asia through California will face challenges meeting the EV mandate.

Hilgers emphasized the lack of EV infrastructure in Nebraska, where there are no charging stations along major routes like I-80. He noted the rapid timeline for compliance with the EV mandate, which starts at 10 percent and increases over time, ultimately leading to a dramatic shift in the transportation industry.

Overall, Hilgers warned that the mandate represents a sudden and substantial transformation of the supply chain, impacting not just Nebraskans but a broader network of businesses. The shift to electric vehicles poses significant challenges in terms of technology, production capabilities, and mineral resources necessary for battery production.
