During a night of left-wing protests in Berlin, a group of protestors set fire to and destroyed 16 Amazon delivery vans, believed to be an act of arson. Despite this incident, police reported that the protests were mostly trouble-free. The protests occurring on the night before May First are part of a long-standing tradition in Germany known as Walpurgisnacht. The protests continued into May Day, with over 5,000 police officers deployed in Berlin to handle the demonstrations. Additional protests, including one focusing on Palestine, were expected to take place in the heavily left-leaning Neukölln district. The city’s conservative mayor warned against any violent acts, stating that throwing stones at police officers would not be tolerated. Before the protests began, strict conditions were outlined to prohibit any statements inciting hatred or violence.
