In the upcoming primary election in West Virginia, all eyes are on critical races for governor and Congress. The state, known for its ruby-red politics, is expected to see a new wave of leadership emerge, with familiar faces in West Virginia politics vying for key positions. Former President Donald Trump’s strong performance in the state in 2020 is indicative of the dominance of the Republican Party in West Virginia, with the possibility of no Democrats representing the state in Congress after this election cycle.

The primary election in West Virginia is seen as the de facto election, according to Sam Workman from the West Virginia University Institute for Policy Research and Public Affairs. Despite the decision of Senator Joe Manchin not to seek reelection, outside spending in West Virginia has continued to increase, making it one of the most expensive races this primary season.

In the gubernatorial race, the Republican primary is competitive, with six candidates vying for the nomination to succeed Gov. Jim Justice. The Senate race is also drawing attention, with Rep. Alex Mooney as a top contender against Justice, who has garnered support from establishment Republicans and former President Trump.

The congressional races in West Virginia’s 1st and 2nd districts are also heating up, with incumbent Rep. Carol Miller facing a primary challenge from Derrick Evans in the 1st district. Evans, a former lawmaker involved in the January 6th Capitol riot, is seen as a long shot against Miller. In the 2nd district, the departure of Rep. Mooney has left the seat open, leading to a competitive five-way primary.

Overall, the primary election in West Virginia is shaping up to be a crucial and competitive event, setting the stage for new leadership in the Mountain State.
