Donald Trump is set to take the stage for the first time since a would-be assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania last July. The event, taking place in Grand Rapids, Michigan, commences at 5:00 PM ET, and will mark the inaugural joint appearance with his running mate, J.D. Vance, who was officially nominated as the Vice Presidential candidate at the Republican National Convention earlier this week.
Despite the increased presence of local and state police at the venue, the eager crowd gathered to see Trump and Vance seem largely unfazed by concerns over safety. The region of Michigan, which boasts a vital 15 Electoral College votes, is widely regarded as a crucial battleground in the election. Trump claimed victory in the state in 2016, only to lose it to President Joe Biden in 2020.
Recent polls suggest Trump may be regaining his footing in Michigan, with some surveys placing him ahead of Biden by as much as 3 points in a head-to-head matchup. A more striking finding is that Trump appears to be outperforming not only Biden but also Vice President Kamala Harris, polling 5 points higher when matched directly against her.
