The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has lauded Vice President Kamala Harris’s decision to choose Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, viewing it as a significant victory for the organization and its allies on the left.

In a statement on X, the DSA celebrated Harris’s selection of Walz, saying it demonstrates the growing influence of the socialist movement in the United States. The group claimed that its collective action, along with that of other left-wing organizations, has made it clear that change is necessary.

The DSA also highlighted its own efforts to realign the labor movement in support of Palestinian liberation, suggesting that these efforts have contributed to the growing recognition of the organization’s power.

The statement came just hours after Harris announced her decision to choose Walz as her running mate, describing herself as “proud” of the selection. The choice of Walz was seen as a surprise to some, as Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro had been considered a potential contender for the role.

However, Shapiro’s pro-Israel views were reportedly a point of contention within the Democratic Party, and it is possible that these views may have contributed to his being passed over in favor of Walz.

Walz has a track record of supporting progressive policies, including signing a bill requiring Minnesota schools to provide period products in boys’ bathrooms. He has also signed legislation allowing eligible undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses and access free college tuition.

Additionally, Walz has signed bills making Minnesota a sanctuary state and allowing minors to undergo sex changes, further solidifying his reputation as a champion of left-wing causes.
