Variety’s Desperate Plea: Taylor Swift, Please Endorse Kamala Harris

Variety has taken aim at Taylor Swift, publishing a column on Monday that scolds the singer for her silence on the 2024 presidential election. The publication’s Daniel D’Addario writes that Swift’s decision to remain mum on the election is “regrettable,” given her past history of supporting Democratic candidates, including Joe Biden.

The column takes a swipe at Swift’s social life, noting that she has been spotted with Brittany Mahomes, who has been thanked by former President Donald Trump for her support. This, according to Variety, is evidence that Swift is not committed to the Democratic cause.

The publication’s criticism of Swift comes as two major polls show former President Donald Trump pulling ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race. With less than two months to go until the election, Swift’s silence on the issue is becoming increasingly conspicuous.

Variety’s column suggests that Swift’s past forays into politics were cynical and self-serving, and that her decision to remain silent now undermines her previous efforts. “Given how much mileage Taylor Swift got in the past out of her decision to speak out on politics, the idea that she will remain silent would seem to make her past speaking out, at a more convenient moment, appear cynical,” D’Addario writes.

The latest polls show Trump leading Harris nationally, with the New York Times/Siena poll giving him a one-point edge, 48 to 47 percent. The Harvard-Harris poll also shows Trump ahead, 47 to 46 percent.
